Dangerous Places, Dangerous Minds: Working with Anger and Shame: 31st October

Date: Wednesday 31st October 2018: 10am – 4:30pm

Venue: Catharsis Arts Therapy Centre – Derby

Facilitated by Alun Mountfield:
Psychodrama Psychotherapist, Actor and Applied Theatre Practitioner.  He is a former member of Geese Theatre Company, working as an actor, group facilitator and senior trainer for the company from 1989 until 2005.  He is co-editor of The Geese Theatre Handbook which has become required reading for students of applied theatre in universities and colleges throughout the UK.  He has co-designed theatre based offending behaviour programmes for Probation Services nationally, focusing in particular on the rehabilitation of violent offenders.  He began running psychodrama groups in HMP Grendon Underwood in 2000 and from 2008 until 2018 also facilitated one of the primary therapy groups. In addition he has created a number of theatre and video pieces designed to present the experiences of offenders who have come into therapy to explore their offending behaviour.  These have been performed at a number of conferences and events in the prison and have been well received by inmates and guests. Since 2005, he has worked as a freelance theatre practitioner and also as a psychotherapist in private practice.

Anger is a common experience but one that is often misunderstood.  It is often described as a “secondary emotion”, one that is fed by unresolved emotions that are too painful to name.  At the heart of this experience lies the feeling of shame. Drawing on experience of working with violent offenders for thirty years, the day will be an opportunity to explore how anger works and how we might work with it to address its roots in shame and encourage change.  The workshop will be a combination of theory and action including the use of theatre techniques to explore the way in which anger and shame are experienced by our clients.

The primary aims of the session will include addressing:

The roots of anger in childhood experiences

Shame and it’s role in generating anger and aggression

Cycles of anger

Methods of working with anger & shame in group and one-to one settings

The aim is to provide a safe and inclusive environment where participants can discuss their own experience of working with anger and shame in groups and one-to-one.  It is also suitable for any other professionals who wishes to increase their knowledge and understanding of the relationship between anger and shame and how to work with them.

The process will include games and exercises designed to stimulate discussion and to facilitate the process.

 • Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
 • A light lunch will be provided

Cost: £95

*All participants will be given a CPD certificate upon completion.

Wish Dolls – A 1 ½ hour Doll Making workshop for Young People

Venue: The Mill, Lodge Lane Derby. Dates: 22, 23, 29 and 30 December.

Wish Dolls are simple fabric dolls that contain a wish, hidden by the doll maker. Whereby the famous ‘Guatemalan Worry Dolls’ sit and fret, Wish Dolls hold a wish and hope for the future. Each Young Person will have an end product to take away, keep and enjoy.

During the workshop young people will not be asked to share their wishes, unless they want to. They will spend time thinking about wishes and helping pick a wish that has the potential to come true. The wishes are private, hidden in the doll; a secret held between doll and maker.

The making of dolls can be very relaxing, soothing and fun. Wish Dolls are a ‘no sew’ doll and can be made by anyone, even those who don’t feel confident at making crafts. They are tactile, soft and are of a size that fits neatly in the hand, meaning they can be carried in the pocket and taken everywhere.

Wish Dolls provide an opportunity for young people to think about their hopes, wishes and potential futures in a safe, contained space, under the supervision of a trained therapist. Groups will be limited to 5.

The workshop aims to

 • Reduce anxiety
 • Increase self-esteem
 • Support young people and increase their coping strategies
 • Provide a positive focus for the future.
